my first car tyre swan

With some help and advice I made my first swan from a car tyre last week - many thanks to Laurie and Kevin.
Now it's off to the Men's Shed North Shore ( www.mensshednorthshore.org.nz ) to make a head out of wood, and to attach a length of metal  to make the neck curve upwards.

Boat-building commenced at the Shed today.
Below Trustee John, Bernie, & Trustee Ian are marking out ("lofting") the plan onto a sheet of ply.

famous for 15 minutes?

Last week a team of TV students from AUT visited the Shed to conduct interviews with Shed members and get footage of Shed activities for their final project.
The finished video will be some seven minutes long, and will generously be made available for Shed use on youtube and at presentations.

an old farm shed

Last week we went up to the Kaipara Harbour for a few days. On one of our walks we came across an old abandoned farm shed - with the tools still hanging on the wall.
A piece of real NZ farming history here - maybe someone from Te Papa would support the relocation of this gem to our National Museum?

lunchtime at the shed

Men's Shed North Shore is now open and members are coming in on Mondays/Wednesdays/Saturdays from 10-3 to work on projects and get together and have a yarn.
Subjects over lunch last Monday ranged from V8 racing, modified Anglias, auctions, MIG welders, internet scams, selling real estate, speeding tickets, Bunnings Vs Mitre 10 service-wise, buying building materials at trade prices, making swans from car tyres, and racing at Western Springs.
I mentioned that I have some black and white 8mm film footage of racing at Western Springs in the 1950's, and offered to bring a projector and the film to the Shed this week for a movie show.

grand opening

After seven years work the Men's Shed North Shore was opened on Sunday 7th April 2013.
Kaipatiki Local Board Chair Lindsay Waugh did the honours and cut the "ribbon" to applause from the large crowd of dignitaries, members and supporters.
The Shed was then opened for inspection, and The "Pink Ladies" put on a sumptuous afternoon tea in the lunch-room.
The list of people to thank is extensive, to say the least, but especial thanks must be extended to Jill Nerheny QSM (Senior Community Co-ordinator for the Kaipatiki Community Facilities Trust) who was inspired by the Men's Sheds she visited on a trip to Australia to set about establishing one here on the North Shore in Auckland.

is your driver's license expired?

The Herald on Sunday revealed in February that the licenses of some 500,000 New Zealanders were expired - exposing them to a $400 fine and possible nullification of their car insurance.

Check your license - & get it renewed asap if necessary!

check your smoke-alarms

Daylight-saving is about to end  - turn your clocks BACK an hour early on Sunday 7 April, or on Saturday the 6th as you go to bed.
For advice on installing and maintaining smoke-alarms check the NZ Fire Service website:
HERE  and avoid this:

"Each year, the New Zealand Fire Service attends over 3,500 house fires.
In over 80% of those fires, smoke alarms were either not installed or not working. Most fire fatalities occur in homes, mainly while people are sleeping when they can’t smell smoke. Smoke alarms are the best possible defence you and your family have from dying in a fire."

the benefits of a paperless world

The sellers of all things IT are pushing the message that paper is soooo twentieth century, and that utopia is a paperless-world.
